Clan Johnston/e in America is proud to sponsor a new program for the study and preservation of the Lochwood Tower site. During the 1980s our Chief undertook a substantial effort to preserve the ruins of Lochwood Tower. However, much of the site still has not been excavated and it is not yet possible to see the full extent of the castle. In particular, the west range of outbuildings is still covered with rubble, the motte to the north is covered with trees and thick brush, and the layout of the formal gardens adjacent to the castle is not visible. Below is an aerial photograph of the Lochwood site taken by Simmons Mapping (UK) Limited of Bristol, England, and furnished by AERO-METRIC, INC. showing the currently excavated and unexcavated portions of the site: In June 1999, Historic Scotland, a governmental agency, scheduled Lochwood Tower under the Ancient Monuments and Architectural Areas Act 1979. Under the Act, no further works may be undertaken without the prior consent of the Secretary of State for Scotland. However, scheduling under the Act also means that Lochwood is now eligible for an Ancient Monuments Grant of up to 50% of the eligible conservation costs. The Lochwood Tower Study and Preservation Fund will help to finance the balance of the cost of excavation and conservation and thus to further the significant work which has already been accomplished in safeguarding our shared heritage. In additon, architectual Site Survey and Print Sets of Lochwood, suitable for framing, drawn in the 1960s by Alastair M.T. Maxwell-Irving are now available from Clan Johnston/e in America, and all of the the surplus from the sale of these drawings will be devoted to the restoration initiative. Below is a portion of one of Mr. Maxwell-Irving's drawings, rotated so that the top of the picture is north:
Site Survey and Print Sets are available in large (20" x 30") and small (16" x 30") sizes. Large sets are thirty-five dollars (U.S. $35.00) plus five dollars (U.S. $5.00) for shipping and handling. Small sets are twenty-five dollars (U.S. $25.00) plus plus five dollars (U.S. $5.00) for shipping and handling. Payment for castle models and Site Survey and Print Sets may be made by check or money order payable to "Clan Johnston/e in America." For further information
